Comments from the Designer
Welcome to our June issue of the Tboat newsletter.
It has been a busy time for us over the past couple of months. We are busy developing our business offshore in Australia, the USA and Europe. The first of the T35's is now sailing in the States and by all accounts is sailing very well. We have finished the development programme with the T590 and are about to embark on the mould development in New Zealand.

T590 SPECIAL
The first of the T590's is for Sale at a very special price of $22,500.00 NZD. We will ship anywhere in the world, shipping at an additional charge. Refer to our For Sale page fiveninety for more details on this boat. Don't miss out this is a real special price for a great boat. For more details on this design refer to our design page design, or our photo gallery.

Currently our design office is working on a number of larger racing yachts for offshore owners, more on that next month.

Our website development is ongoing, we have taken the step of maintaining our site inhouse. It has been a huge learning process and Kim is coping well with the task. This month our newsletter is also available as a PDF file which allows the user to download the file onto their computer and print the whole document. If you refer to the top left of our newsletter you will see an icon for a PDF file, if you click on this you will be able to download our newsletter. For those unfamiliar with PDF you can go to our links page and download the Adobe PDF reader and this will enable you to read all PDF files

AC Cup News
There has been a lot of talk recently with regards to the AC Cup and the new players in the game. Our own Tem NZ is very involved at this stage as a lot of the overseas syndicates see our sailors and design team as a good place to start. It was a surprise to many to hear of Russell and Brad moving to a rival syndicate after all the talk of a NZ AC Cup dynasty. And after all the flak has died down this is the aspect that has most disturbed the Team and New Zealanders. What most people should realise is that most of our top sailors spend more time sailing overseas than in NZ and we do have a good pool of talent here to cope with the loss of those going to other syndicates. I would rather see a fresh team of talent sailing for NZ than guys that are here because they feel they have some sort of moral obligation to do so. Sailing is all about motivation, money can be a big motivator at times but it can not be the total motivator at this level.
For more information on the gossip on the AC I recomend the newsletter Scuttlebutt.

We have some sailing pictures of the T850 and some of the new T35 being shipped to the states. Also included this month are some comments from our clients with boats either sailing or under construction. Please feel free to add your input into our newsletter by emailing us at

Happy sailing
Steve Thompson

T35
The Thompson 35 has been designed specially for the American market, it fills the gap for a larger racing yacht that is capable of being towed on a trailer that can be dry sailed. This boat has a removable rudder and a lifting keel, there is a central lifting hook on the top of the keel for hoisting onto its custom built trailer. This boat is pure racing with a large roomy cockpit with all sailing controls carefully placed for ease of use, yet we have managed to provide a functional interior for racing and short cruising.

Performance will be exhilarating with a large sail plan and a heavy lead bulb for added stability. The boat is expected to be capable of beating the forty footers upwind and to blow them away downwind. We have completed extensive testing on the design and have shown exceptional light air performance both upwind and downwind and yet it is a very stable and fast boat in a breeze. This boat is ideally suited for both inshore and coastal racing. The hull sections are a development of our successful T30 being fine upfront to allow the boat to sail well in a chop.

Some Comments from our Boat Owners and crew
T850 - Men at Work (New Zealand)
Dear Steve,

Just a short note regarding our Thompson 850 "Men At Work 3"

Our two previous "men At Work's" had what I would call the X factor. Steve I hope its not to premature but "Men At Work 3" by comparison would rate a triple X factor. So far in sixteen races we have managed fourteen firsts and two seconds due to minor breakdowns which is usual with a new boat.

We have had many compliments Steve not only on performance but also the design, finish and quality of contruction. The amount of time and effort that you personally contributed to the project was beyond any expectations from a yacht designer. My best decision in 1999 was the day we decided to proceed with the project and shook hands on the deal.

Should any of your future clients wish to contact me by phone they are welcome to call me.

Thank you Steve (Tomo)

Yours sincerely

Jon Ward (Wardie)

Hot 2 Trot
Just a short note to let you know that my Thompson 8 "Hot 2 Trot" has recently won three Championships. I have written a short article below.

"Leading sports boat skipper and Quantum sailmaker David Eickmeyer has just one thing on his mind - winning races. He pushes himself, his crew and his Thompson 8 "Hot 2 Trot" relentlessly and his recent T8 successes are a clear illustration of this. He has successfully defended his Trailable Yacht National Championship title by winning it for the second year in a row. The event attracted approximately 60 competitors and was hosted by the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron on 21st-23rd April 2000. He has also won the Victorian Trailable Yacht Championships (Mordialloc Yacht Club, 18th-19th March 2000) and the NSW Sportsboat Championships (Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, 25th-26th March 2000).

David, like his business Quantum Sail Design Group, is committed to competition. His T8 carries Fusion sails made from a revolutionary composite racing sail fabric that provides up to 30% more strength, stretch resistance and durability than any other composite material currently used in sailmaking. Fusion sailcloth was developed by Quantum Sail Design Group and is exclusive to Quantum. A well-designed super fast T8 coupled with brand new sail technology has proven to be an extremely successful combination".

T750 (USA)
11 May 2000
From Jay Price,
Chapel Hill, North Carolina
U.S.A.

I'm the brilliant guy who commissioned the 750 design just as he was planning a first child. So, despite encouragement from Steve (who upon visiting in 98 and seeing my perhaps too meticulous strip-planking, noted that I wasn't supposed to be building a piano), after more than two years of construction mine's still not in the water and many other 750's are scooting to and from collecting silver. In my own defense, I'm doing it all myself including the hull rollover, which I accomplished with a great number of ropes and blocks and am able to spend an average of only perhaps 3-4 hours a week on the project. As far as actual time spent in the boatshed, I've been surprised at how quickly the boat has come together. The photos are recent, though there has been some additional progress:

The cabin interior walls have been clear-coated with linear polyurethane, a sliding Delrin/E-glass car now is in place in the forward bulkhead slot to facilitate articulation of the prod, and the bunk-bench surfaces are in place.
In the photo from the bow looking back, the wide lens exaggerates the tubular housing I came up with for the articulating prod. It's actually not nearly as large as it looks and is barely noticeable in person, I swear. On the plus side, a friend has acquired a Viper 830, Steve's first production design over here, and so I can race without having to pay for the thousands of dollars worth of stuff I break. You're not reading this are you Pete? Actually, I have saved so much money by not sailing my own boat that I am now negotiating the direct purchase of of the America's Cup, thereby avoiding this unseemly bidding war for Team New Zealand. I may also acquire Auckland, Prada's clothing operation and Bill Koch, too, depending on how much change I receive. The Viper is doing really well. I believe we have A-class for our spring series locked up, despite it being our first set of races on the boat, and if the 750 is even half as easy to sail, I'll be delighted. One cautionary note: Based on performance at Key West Race Week 98, I would encourage all who read this not to allow Mr. Thompson to bring the liquor of his choice when you invite him to dinner. Tequila is not normally produced in Greece last time I checked.
Cheers,
Jay Price

Race Results
T7 New South Wales State Titles
Contratulations Kim Williams owner of "Rock 'n Roll", with five wins in five races, Kim sailed away with the New South Wales State Titles. Traks Gordon sailing "Nothing Else Matters" was second and Bruce Picket sailing on "Deadly Sins" from Victoria was third. The series was sailed at Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club in April and was well organized with great courses and a good variation of breezes. The upwind speed of the winning boat was the major factor as they were first around every windward mark. North working gear and Quantum spinakers were used. The racing was tight between Williams and Gordon with an average half minute between them over the
short courses.
